Welcome to my new site! :-D
Hello there, my name is Jim Smith and I'm from Paris, France. I'm quite involved in computers actually, I'm a programmer that specializes in PHP, C++, Objective-C and Java. I'm quite busy as you can imagine :-) But I decided to make my own site where I can talk about the various different tech things I know about, providing my opinions and giving helpful resources to you guys. I'll try to put some tutorials on here at some point to teach you guys how to program too, because it's a skill that will definitely come in handy in the future.
The first thing to discuss is software. As a programmer it can be a lot of work to create something that is actually useful. I invest a lot of time and money to create products that people like, but unfortunately these days people are demanding more and more and they want it for free too, something which is very difficult to provide. Open source software might be good for some users but for people like me it makes it really hard to make a living. The tools I create generate my household income - if it wasn't for them I'd have no money. For that reason, I'm sure you can see why I'm not a big fan of open source.
Closed source is something I'm a bigger fan of. You can read more about it on Wikipedia if you want to, but I'll give a brief explanation here. This is where the developers keep the source code of the products they make, so that nobody else can see it. This then allows them to sell it and make a profit from it. You'll use this kind of software every single day, it's the kind of software that Microsoft like to create and make a huge profit on. This is how I make my money. However, I can see what other people mean when they say they like it the other way around, which I'll talk about now.
Open source is where the source IS available for anyone to download. This means that anyone can look at how a program works and alter it if they really want to. It also means that downloads are much easier to access, which is why there has been a huge increase in software download sites like this one. It's useful for the user because they can find many different versions of the tools they like, some of which could possibly have more features. This is mainly free too, so they know that they won't have to pay anything for it. It isn't perfect, but it's genuinely pretty good in some respects as has been shown with the Linux operating system.
